Templating and Seam Reinforcement
A Flat Seam Is Built Before The Stone Arrives
Placing a joint well is half the work. The other half is making sure it stays flat, tight and supported once the kitchen is being used every day.
Almost every bad seam we get called out to inspect failed for a reason that had nothing to do with the fabrication. The cabinets were not level. The cutout had no reinforcement. The template was taken off a plan instead of the actual room. Stone is unforgiving about all three because it does not flex to hide anybody’s mistakes.
Templating After The Cabinets Are Set
We template with a digital system, on site, after the boxes are installed and levelled. Not from a drawing, and not before the cabinets go in.
The reason is straightforward. In this part of Riverside there is a lot of nineteen fifties and nineteen sixties tract housing plus the older Wood Streets and Victoria Ave homes, and square walls are the exception rather than the rule. A back wall can wander a quarter of an inch across an eight foot run and nothing about the kitchen will look wrong until a straight edged stone top is set against it.
A digital template captures the wall as it actually is. The back edge gets scribed to match, so the top sits tight rather than leaving a gap for caulk to fill and then crack out of.
Templating also fixes the last details in place: overhang, the exact position of the faucet and any air gap, edge profile, and how the top meets a range or a fridge cabinet.
Levelling, Which Is Where Lipped Seams Come From
If you can catch a fingernail on a joint, the run underneath was not level when the stone went down.
Before any piece is set we run a laser across the cabinet tops. A run should be flat within roughly an eighth of an inch over ten feet, and the two boxes either side of a joint need to be within a hair of each other, because whatever difference exists between them becomes the lip.
On slab-on-grade construction, which is most of Riverside, the good news is that the floor is stable and the boxes stay where you put them. The less good news is that a poured slab is not necessarily flat, so cabinets set straight onto it without shimming can be out from the day they were installed.
Where a run is out, it gets shimmed then, before the stone goes on. It is fifteen minutes at that stage. Afterwards it is a full removal and reset.
Pulling And Filling The Joint
The two pieces are drawn together with seam setters, vacuum pads that grip each side and let the halves be pulled tight and levelled against each other in small increments.
The fill is a two part epoxy tinted on the spot to match the material. Matching is done against the actual slab under the light in that kitchen, not from a chart, because a colour that looks right in a workshop can read grey under warm downlights.
One inland detail worth knowing. Epoxy kicks faster in heat and low humidity, and a Riverside summer afternoon gives noticeably less working time than a mild coastal morning. That is a reason to plan the pour, not a reason to rush it.
Reinforcing The Cutouts
The front rail of a sink cutout is the weakest strip of stone in the whole kitchen. It is narrow, it carries an undermount sink that gets filled with water, and people lean on it.
So cutout corners are radiused rather than cut square, because a square internal corner concentrates stress at a point and that is where a crack starts. The front rail gets rodded, a steel or fibreglass rod set into a channel in the underside and bedded in epoxy. Undermount sinks get mechanically supported from the cabinet rather than hung on adhesive alone.
Cooktop cutouts get the same treatment plus a margin from any joint, and where a heat source and a seam have to coexist, the joint is kept well clear.
Repairing An Existing Seam
Sometimes worth doing. An old joint that has discoloured, picked up a dark line of grime, or opened slightly can be routed out, cleaned, re-pulled and refilled with a fresh colour match.
Sometimes not worth doing. If the lip comes from cabinets that are genuinely out of level, refilling the joint changes nothing, and grinding the high side flat removes the factory polish and leaves a dull patch that is more obvious than the lip was.
